Congratulations to Jae Cooper & Callum Hill

To continually improve Samson Nano and enhance its data capture, Jae Cooper (previously Engineering Supervisor) has been developing new software, applying skills learned through his HND and recent Siemens PLC courses. This has been instrumental in the launch of Samson Nano Live

Having a dedicated full-time engineer has allowed us to identify where changes were needed, implement advancements, and deliver even more for the customer. To build on this success, Jae’s role will now solely focus on R&D, continuous improvement processes and technology breakthroughs for Samson Nano.

During Jae’s secondment to R&D, Callum Hill (previously Engineering Team Leader) has stepped up and provided cover for Jae’s supervisor role. He has shown incredible leadership skills and risen to every challenge. Moving forward, Jae Cooper is now R&D Engineering Manager and Callum Hill Engineering Supervisor.

Both will report to Duncan Cummins who heads up our Engineering Team, and both will be working with our team of engineers and Samson Nano Admin, implementing the changes and improvements in the field, and in the office.

Congratulations to Jae and Callum, we look forward to building on their previous success and achievements and adding value to our brand. For more information visit Samson Pallet Stability here

Samson Pallet Stability launch Samson Nano Live at PPMA 2023

Samson Pallet Stability were delighted to launch their newest innovation at PPMA 2023: Samson Nano Live.

Samson Nano is the revolutionary pallet wrapping system from Samson Pallet Stability, famed for its cutting edge technology and its fixed-price-per-wrapped pallet costing, which includes the Capex-free machine, all film, servicing and maintenance as part of a fixed price per wrapped pallet.

The Samson Nano has always had internet-linked reporting software, which allows the customer to see how many pallets are being wrapped, and the team at Samson Pallet Stability to monitor for any failed wraps or inconsistencies. This software has had a major overhaul, resulting in the development of Samson Nano Live.

Using the unique dashboard, the team and their clients are able to access real-time data of all the machines that they have in the field. The new technology allows them to monitor how many wraps the machine has done to date, the position of the turntable and the loadcell value as it changes, live. Samson Nano Live also monitors which sensors on the machine have been triggered, which allows the team to identify any faults, and receive an alert at head office should there be any issues. Since customers are not charged for failed wraps, it’s in the interest of both Samson Pallet Stability and the customer to be alerted as soon as possible if there are any problems.

The technology also provides data on all the pallets that have been wrapped, including the time they were wrapped, the setting they were wrapped on, and how much film was used. They are also able to see specific wrap data per setting, per day. There is also a live graph to show how many total wraps have been completed in any one day, allowing perpetual monitoring of output, together with easy viewing of peaks and troughs of activity.

“We are confident that Samson Nano Live represents exceptional added value to our customers,” says Julia Davis, Managing Director of Samson Pallet Stability. “We are committed to helping our customers to use as little wrap as possible to safely and securely wrap their pallets, and ultimately get them to their destination in perfect condition. This new system allows us to show in real time the effectiveness of the machines, and allows customers to draw down data quickly and easily for their own reporting.”

Samson Nano Live follows on the heels of the launch of the Samson Nano Slingshot, the horizontal stability-testing facility launched by Samson Pallet Stability in 2021, which certifies pallets to EUMOS standards by replicating the inertia of a braking vehicle to 0.8G.

Charity Support and Sponsorship

Our staff are key to the success of Samuel Grant and we are proud to support them and their families in charitable interests and community ventures. From sponsoring cricket, football and rugby to dance championships and the National Pot Leek Society, the range of endeavours is vast; we also make charitable donations to causes close to our employees’ hearts.

We are pleased to sponsor the National Pot Leek Society as Brian Boucher, Packaging Specialist at Samuel Grant North East, is a longtime supporter and leek enthusiast. The Society held its annual show in the Seaham Youth and Community Centre in September, attracting visitors and top exhibitors from all around the UK. As well as all classes of leeks, the venue also hosted the Northeast Giant Vegetable contest. “It means a lot that Samuel Grant are thinking about their staff and taking an interest in what they’re doing out in the community,” says Brian.

We are also proud to sponsor Normanton Knights’ Under 14 Girls’ rugby league team including their kits, after-match polo shirts and hoodies. Our Group Operations Manager, Lauren Davis’s daughter, Lillie, plays for the team, established for just two years and competing in the Under 14s East League this season.

Packaging Specialist, Jeremy Cox’s daughter, Isobel, is a member of the award-winning ElLiTe Studios’ Dance Team, based in Wakefield. They qualified for the 2023 Dance World Championships in Braga, Portugal, ultimately winning gold! We are delighted to sponsor the squad and wish them the best of luck in next year’s competitions.

We are also official kit sponsors for the Harrogate Rugby Club Foundation. Coached by MD Matthew Grant, the U15s, with the next generation of Grants, Luke and Robbie on the team, achieved victory in the Yorkshire Cup. Samuel Grant is also sponsoring the School’s Outreach Programme, opening up opportunities for more children to access and play rugby union.

More team sponsorship, this time for cricket. Ouseburn Cricket Club have had an outstanding season, with the Under 13s winning the Nidderdale Cup. Sixteen teams competed in the competition, with Ouseburn and Pannal meeting in the final. Ouseburn were the victors by just nine runs, in a thrilling match. In another exciting match, the Men’s First XII won the final of the Atkinson-Swires Cup, beating Helperby by 4 wickets.

Many of our staff get involved in fundraising for charities and Samuel Grant offers match funding, meaning funds raised by an employee are matched by the company. Group MD Andrew Grant embarked on his own fundraising venture in 2022, cycling the length of the country from Land’s End to John ‘O Groats over nine days. “It was a lot harder than I thought it would be when I set out, but I raised £15,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to my heart, as that was a disease my father had in his last days.”

Richard Knight, Area Sales Manager, walked 26 miles around the hills of Holmfirth and Huddersfield. raising over £12,000 which Samuel Grant matched, for Eden, a child in his son’s school, who needs life-saving medical treatment in America. “I was the top fundraiser, which wouldn’t have happened without the support of Samuel Grant,” said Richard. Eden has now made three trips to New York for her treatment, which we’re pleased to hear is going well.

Sam Haigh from Clingfoil and her sister Becky fundraised for Prevent Breast Cancer’s National Breast Imaging Academy Appeal, by taking part in the Great Manchester Run earlier this year. Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2022 and despite a gruelling treatment that included chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she completed the 10k run, crossing the finishing line with Sam by her side. “We are so thankful for the charity donation match offered by the Samuel Grant Group as this doubled our fundraising. We managed to raise over £3,000.00 for Prevent Breast Cancer which is such an amazing charity,” said Sam. “I am beyond proud of Becky for her attitude throughout her treatment and how she has tackled all the obstacles thrown her way.”

Darren Laidler, Senior Sales and Technical Support at Marmax, completed the Great North Run 2023, raising £270 for The Children’s Foundation, which will be matched by Samuel Grant. “This was my third Great North Run, all have been completed for The Children’s Foundation for the amazing work they do to help the well-being of children from birth to 18 years, who are classed as being the most vulnerable for whatever reason,” said Darren. “This year was especially tough due to the 25-degree heat followed by thunder and lightning, but I got there in the end despite injury hitting at the 6-mile mark.”

Introducing… Greenstretch®

Introducing… Greenstretch® an eco-friendly and more sustainable alternative to your current stretch film.

We are excited to launch a superior 10-micron film, containing up to 30% recycled material. By using recycled plastic in production, we reduce the use of primary raw material, so the film is produced in compliance with the principles of circular economy. The carbon footprint is reduced further as the film is fully recyclable after use.

As well as offering ecological benefits, the film has a high holding force and puncture resistance keeping the film’s stretch rate and strength at optimum levels.

30% recycled content means there’s no plastic tax to pay, plus the option to bulk pack minimises cardboard waste and increases environmental benefits even further.

Samson Pallet Stability Announces Launch

Samson Pallet Stability (formerly known as Samuel Grant (Sheffield) are delighted to announce their launch.

Following the success of the Queen’s Award-winning Samson Nano pallet wrapping system, the company has been steadily working over the last ten years towards becoming the UK’s Centre of Excellence for pallet stability, investing heavily in equipment and expertise.

The Samson Nano is a unique offering, which gives customers the chance to wrap pallets to the highest standard capex free, with the machine, service and maintenance, and all the film, included in a fixed price per wrapped pallet.

The Slingshot was added in 2020, and is a horizontal pallet testing table which can replicate the inertia of a braking vehicle to 0.8G and allow customers to certify their loads to exacting EUMOS standards.

In addition, the expertise will remain in Sheffield for strapping for load stability, including consumables, tools and machinery. This includes the popular ‘swap and drop’ service for tools, eliminating downtime.

Andrew Grant, Managing Director of Samuel Grant Group said of the launch: “For a long time Samuel Grant Sheffield have been the market leaders in pallet excellence. The new company separates Samson Pallet Stability from the general packaging provided from Samuel Grant (Leeds and North East), and gives us more scope to grow and develop our specialist products and services.”

Samson Pallet Stability are proud members of the CILT (Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport) and the Cold Chain Federation. They welcome approaches for any company wanting to get their palletised goods to their destination safely and in perfect condition.

Samson Pallet Stability remain members of the Samuel Grant Group.

Congratulations to Simon Bagnell

Congratulations to Simon Bagnell, Warehouse Manager at Samuel Grant Leeds, celebrating 20 years of service, a huge achievement! Starting in 2003 as a Warehouse Operative, Simon has worked his way up to management level, adapting to change, gaining valuable experience and taking on more responsibility as the business has grown. The commitment and loyalty of staff help to make Samuel Grant the successful business it is today. Thank you, Simon, from all the Samuel Grant family.

“I joined Samuel Grant in 2003 from a highly pressurised logistics background and this proved to be the vocation for me.

Starting in the warehouse, my experience proved very valuable to the business, I suggested and implemented many improvements within the organisation. Working alongside Erik, Peter and David, who were true gentlemen, the business has flourished and the challenges were met head on.

Every day is different and working for Samuel Grant is a pleasure, giving me a sense of belonging to a great, family business. My opinions and suggestions are always listened to, making me feel valued as an employee.

In the time I have worked for Samuel Grant the business has grown rapidly but we have always managed to adapt to the increase in workload and the changes in how we work. The most important part of the team is the players, and we are more of a family than workers, we all help each other overcome whatever is put in front of us.

My experience led me to progressing through the ranks, having successfully taken on roles in the trade counter and stock management, leading me to become Warehouse Manager.

In the future, I can see great things happening to the business under the strong leadership skills of Andrew and Matthew; I am sure that David would be a very proud father.

I would like this opportunity to say thank you for the last 20 years, it has been a pleasure.”

Simon Bagnell

Warehouse Manager

Andrew Grant to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats

Samuel Grant’s Joint Managing Director, Andrew Grant, is embarking on the journey of a lifetime, cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats in memory of his father and our former Managing Director, David Grant.

Andrew will undertake the mission in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to his heart, as the final years of David’s life were ruined by the disease.

The journey starts on the 10th September and they hope to reach their destination on the 18th September.

As with all charitable endeavours undertaken by Samuel Grant staff, the company will match fund Andrew’s donations, which at the time of writing are just under half way to his £10,000 target. With the match funding this will hopefully reach an enormous £20,000, which can make a huge difference to the important work the charity does to create the landscape of dementia.

As the saying goes ‘every little helps’. If you are able to sponsor the mission please do go to Andrew’s Just Giving page at:

European Packaging on Tour!

Samuel Grant were absolutely delighted to be appointed as the hosts for May’s PackSynergy meeting. The three day event saw us welcome a group of 32 delegates from PackSynergy member organisations across Europe.

Having decided to base the delegates in York, on the first day we took them up into the Yorkshire Dales to try their hand at some Clay Pigeon Shooting, courtesy of EJ Churchill on the Swinton Estate. It’s fair to say that the results were mixed! The tuition was fun, and gave our group the chance to chat to each other informally, as well as created some healthy competition.

Following this we were shipped to The Staveley Arms in North Stainley, where we treated the group to the finest Yorkshire ales, and hefty portions of fish and chips and pies. The winners of the event were announced, and trophies presented to PackSynergy’s CEO, Thomas Baur, and his team which included Andrew Grant. Interestingly Andrew Grant had chosen who would be in which team, and knew the history of Thomas Baur’s hobbies – which included….no guessing required! The losing team were presented with rubber ducks.

The following morning, the PackSynergy brigade travelled to Leeds to have a full introduction to Samuel Grant Packaging, which included a series of presentations by our team, an introduction to Samson Nano, a demonstration of Samson Nano and the Slingshot, and a delicious buffet in our warehouse 2, together with some PackSynergy branded buns which the team were very impressed with!

On return to York we settled in for an afternoon of meetings and presentations, including a very interesting introduction from Lester Barratt who offered insight into the push by Sealed Air customers into ever greater automation, demand for their auto-bagging (Autobag) and auto-boxing ( i-Pack) machines being at an all-time high. He also shared his biggest challenge which is scaling up quickly to meet this demand.

Our final showcase was a gala dinner at the National Railway Museum in York, which was delicious, despite the smell of coal and oil! A great evening was had by all which was rounded off by a hefty bar bill at the Principal, no doubt resulting in a sore head or two the following morning. In addition to the PackSynergy delegates, we were delighted to welcome our new Clingfoil colleagues, and more representatives from the Samuel Grant team.

Although it won’t be our turn again for a while, as the PackSynergy meetings rotate around the partners, we were so pleased all went to plan, and look forward to meeting the group again at FachPack in September. PackSynergy provides an amazing opportunity for like minded packaging firms to swap best practice and industry knowledge in a non-competitive and collaborative environment, and Samuel Grant have never looked back from becoming the UK arm of the organisation.

Clingfoil joins Samuel Grant Group

The Samuel Grant Group, which includes Samuel Grant Packaging, is delighted to announce that Clingfoil has joined the Group.

Based in Stockport and with £7M of annual sales, Clingfoil are one of the North West’s largest independent distributors of protective packaging materials and stretch film product solutions, providing goods to a wide range of customers across distribution, e-commerce, and manufacturing markets.

By bringing Clingfoil’s manufacturing capabilities into the Group, Samuel Grant will be able to combine their expertise with their own, and actively seek out new innovations and products that can deliver improvements and efficiencies for its customers. The acquisition will allow the team to further develop and research 30% recycled machine and hand stretch film for pallet wrapping. In the light of the recent plastic tax being introduced, the ability to research and develop new films in house will add a huge amount of value to Samuel Grant’s stretch film and pallet wrapping proposition.

Clingfoil was established in 1982 by brothers, Mark and Paul Kenyon, and has grown organically over the years, driven by the brothers’ strong focus on partnerships and customer collaboration, evidenced by a significant number of longstanding relationships within its customer base and an excellent reputation across its networks. The brothers have now reached retirement.

There are an overwhelming number of similarities between the two businesses in terms of culture, family values and the support they give their employees, all 21 of whom will continue to work there when the merge happens. They will also retain their office, warehousing and manufacturing facility. Whilst Paul Kenyon has already retired, Mark will stay within the business to facilitate a seamless transition for the company and conduct a detailed handover of operations.

Andrew Grant, Samuel Grant Group’s Joint Managing Director said: “Given the challenges of international supply that we are finding, adding a UK manufacturing arm to our business will help hugely with continuing to provide our customers with the best possible service. It will also allow us to conduct in-depth research into more environmentally friendly alternatives to virgin polymer stretch wrap, and help us to introduce effective stretch-wrapping solutions with increased recycled content to help reduce the impact of the plastic tax.”

Park Place acted as lead advisor to Samuel Grant Group on the transaction. Ben Peacock, Partner at Park Place, commented: “We are delighted to have advised on bringing these two family businesses together. Samuel Grant will be an excellent home for Clingfoil and alongside their new 30,000 square foot distribution centre in Leeds will support the Grant family’s significant growth aspirations for the group.”

Andrew Bradley and Victoria Innes of Knights provided legal advice to Samuel Grant Group. Funding for the acquisition was provided by NatWest. Dave Wilson from Spinnaker Corporate Finance advised Clingfoil, with Mark Heppell, Sara Bluston and Abigail Gallagher from JMW Solicitors acting on their behalf.

Samuel Grant match funds raised for 6-year-old’s cancer treatment

Samuel Grant’s Richard Knight and his team are lacing up their trainers to raise essential funds for a revolutionary cancer treatment. Six-year-old Eden was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in April 2021 and faces a long road ahead.

Richard, whose children attend the same school as Eden, has committed to a 22-mile walk to support Eden’s cause. The money will go towards a revolutionary cancer treatment which improves survival rates and reduces the chances of relapse.

The treatment is currently only available in the USA, and costs more than $210,000 (£155,000). To help Eden’s fight, Samuel Grant Packaging is matching all Richard’s funds raised for Eden – with his current total standing at £5,300.

The Gardens of Eden tour

Area Sales Manager Richard will join five friends from local rugby club Underbank Rangers to walk 22 miles for Eden. The walk will start at Scholes Cricket Club on Saturday 12th February. The gents will join hundreds of others united in their fight to fund Eden’s treatment.

Richard said: “Before she became too poorly, Eden attended the same school as my two boys in Holmfirth.  Her story was very close to home, particularly when I consider my sons, Jax and Blake.

“When I sat back and thought about what her parents must be going through, I thought I would join the walk and ask for donations. There’s nothing in the world I wouldn’t do for my children, so I thought it was the least I could do for Eden and her family.”

The circular route will finish at Scholes Cricket Club, and has seen sponsorship support from organisations including KG Bathrooms and Project Sport. Samuel Grant Packaging has a pledge to match all funds raised by employees towards charitable causes, and looks forward to matching the donations to help get Eden to the United States.

Add your donation to Eden’s cause

Six-year-old Eden’s journey has been long and harrowing, but she has always stayed smiling. So far, she has had 14 rounds of chemotherapy, with parents Jen and Lee by her side. If you’d like to support Eden’s Army, you can visit Richard Knight’s JustGiving page here.

The Gardens of Eden tour will commence from Scholes Cricket Club on Saturday 12th February. You can donate here.
