Compliance and Guidance

Packaging compliance, made practical

At Samuel Grant Packaging, we help customers improve packaging performance, reduce unnecessary waste, and better understand the packaging they use. As requirements around EPR, Plastic Packaging Tax and recyclability become more important, we provide straightforward advice, useful data and practical support.

Why responsible packaging matters

Packaging is no longer just a purchasing decision. It can affect compliance, reporting, cost and risk across your business.

Customers are under increasing pressure to understand the materials they use, how packaging is classified, what data they need to keep, and how future changes may affect cost. That applies whether you are directly obligated under packaging regulations or feeling the impact through your supply chain.

Responsible packaging is about being better informed, better prepared and better supported.

How Samuel Grant can help

We help customers take a practical view of packaging, looking at performance, material use, recyclability and compliance in a clear and workable way.

Packaging audits

A packaging audit can help you review the materials you use, how they perform, and where changes may reduce waste, improve efficiency or support compliance.

Product and material data

We can help provide the detail customers increasingly need, including weights, material information and packaging classifications across supplied lines.

Recyclability and material choices

Where appropriate, we can advise on alternative materials or formats that support recyclability and make better use of packaging without compromising performance.

Ongoing support

Regulations change, reporting requirements develop, and customer questions become more detailed. We help customers stay informed and respond with confidence.

A practical compliance partner

As packaging rules become more detailed, businesses need more from their packaging supplier than product availability alone.

At Samuel Grant Packaging, we take a practical approach to responsible packaging, helping customers understand the packaging they buy and use, respond to new obligations, and make more informed choices for the future.

That means looking at performance, material use, recyclability and compliance in the round, with advice based on what your business actually needs.

Regulations and Guidance

EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility is the UK packaging regulation that makes obligated businesses responsible for reporting the packaging they place on the market and contributing towards the cost of managing packaging waste.

EPR is changing the way businesses look at packaging. It affects how packaging is classified, recorded and reviewed, and makes recyclability a more direct commercial consideration as harder-to-recycle household packaging can attract higher fees.

RAM

Recyclability Assessment Methodology is the method large producers use to assess how recyclable their household packaging is under EPR. It gives packaging a red, amber or green rating.

RAM brings recyclability into sharper focus. It gives producers a clearer framework for assessing packaging and helps highlight where materials or formats may need to change in response to future cost and compliance pressures.

PPT

Plastic Packaging Tax is a UK tax charged on plastic packaging components that do not contain enough recycled plastic content. From 1 April 2026, the rate is £228.82 per tonne.

For businesses using plastic packaging, PPT makes recycled content and material choice more commercially important. It is a key consideration when reviewing specifications, supply data and future packaging decisions.

PPWR

Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is the new EU regulation replacing the previous Packaging Waste Directive. It creates a more consistent packaging framework across the EU and will generally apply from 12 August 2026.

PPWR is particularly relevant for businesses trading into Europe or supplying into EU-linked supply chains. It points to tighter expectations around packaging design, recyclability and waste reduction across the market.
